1. What new legislation?

This is new legislation from the Department of Energy mandating higher energy efficiency on all residential water heaters by 2016. As we continue to modify and align our energy methods to become as efficient as possible, it can be hard to keep up with the changes, but change we must. The good news is that all certified plumbers are kept up to date with the changes that come hot off the burner so to speak.

2. What kind of water heater does this apply to?

All residential water heaters that heat potable water with oil, electricity or gas. This applies whether it is simply a storage tank or provides hot water instantaneously.

3. Will I be affected?

A small number of water heaters do not require any improvements as they already adhere to the new standards. Unfortunately, many other water heaters do not. Speak to your local plumber, Poulton Plumbing for detailed advice on your water heater model and installations.

4. What if it fails to meet the new requirements?

If your water heater does not comply with the standards then they will have to be upgraded or replaced. Installation could occupy more room than before because new heaters are bigger and heavier. The good news is that you will be getting much more efficient energy bills and your heater will be legal.
